Landis+Gyr expands its EV solutions into Australia and New Zealand with the acquisition of Thundergrid

The acquisition of Thundergrid complements Landis+Gyr’s Electric Vehicle (EV) business in smart charging and flexibility management to accelerate decarbonisation of the grid

Wellington, New Zealand – October 4, 2023 – Landis+Gyr (LAND.SW), a leading provider of integrated energy management solutions, today announced the Company has acquired 100% of Thundergrid New Zealand.

Thundergrid is a Wellington-based EV infrastructure company founded on a mission to ease transition to sustainable electric transport as New Zealand sets to achieve net zero emissions of all greenhouse gases by 2050.  Its commitment to removing barriers to EV adoption, stems from their background in the electricity sector.

The addition of Thundergrid is part of Landis+Gyr’s smart infrastructure growth strategy to accelerate the expansion of EV solutions into Australian and New Zealand (ANZ) markets that have high penetration of renewable energy resources.

“This acquisition is a crucial step in the evolution of our EV solutions, that spans from smart charging to future mobility services in ANZ. Together with Thundergrid’s expertise in EV infrastructure, design and implementation, and Landis+Gyr’s 127 years of experience in transforming the energy sector, we are well positioned to provide customers with turnkey and scalable EV solutions to decarbonise the grid,” said David Maclean, Senior Vice President of Landis+Gyr Asia Pacific.

The acquisition also goes hand in hand with Landis+Gyr’s flexibility management strategy to address complex grid challenges driven by electrification efforts and integration of varied renewable energy resources.

Chief Executive Officer, and Co-Founder of Thundergrid, Jonathan Parker says the acquisition will provide New Zealand an enhanced set of smart energy solutions. “Combining our locally developed Intellectual Property (IP) with the backing of a global energy management solutions leader, means we can progress towards mass EV adoption without overloading the wider electricity grid. This problem is not unique to New Zealand, but as an island nation with an abundance of renewable energy, we are well placed to lead the world in electrification which Landis+Gyr has recognised.”

Thundergrid’s commercial independence including current management and team structure will be retained to drive the company’s vision and strategy in New Zealand.
