Exploring Innovation in Shanghai
Thundergrid’s leadership team Jonathan Zukerman and Glen Necastro had the privilege of visiting manufacturer LinYang in Qidong, China. They operate a cutting-edge battery energy storage system facility in Shanghai. This visit marks a significant step forward in our partnership with LinYang, a global leader in intelligent Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
🔋 What is BESS?
Battery Energy Storage Systems store grid or locally produced electricity for use at a later time. BESS enable “time-shifting”—charging during low-demand (and low cost) periods and discharging during peak times. This is crucial for grid stability, especially as renewable energy sources like solar and wind become more prevalent.
🌏 Why BESS matters in Australia & New Zealand
With widespread electrification and growing EV adoption, BESS is key to:
- Avoiding network upgrades by reducing peak consumption
- Reducing peak electricity costs by charging during off-peak periods
- Enhancing network resilience
- Reducing reliance on fossil fuels
- Supporting energy independence
Thundergrid’s recent work with New Plymouth Airport is a prime example. It’s New Zealand’s first airport taking steps into becoming energy self-sufficient. Our BESS solution stores solar energy to power the terminal overnight. Proving clean energy can be both sustainable and commercially smart.
🤝 Furthering Partnership with LinYang
LinYang’s vertically integrated BESS solutions—from battery cells to full system integration—offer high safety, long life, and intelligent energy management.
Their global expertise complements Thundergrid’s mission to “lighten the load” by delivering scalable, smart energy solutions across Australasia.
Together, we’re building a future where energy is clean, reliable, and accessible for all.
